Our History
The First Congregational Church of Mukwonago has a rich history dating back to 1857. During those early years our ancestors gathered around a covenant and built a meeting house on the corner of Main Street and Blood Street. In the early 1960’s we built and began meeting in the present facility. There are some present generations who have been able to trace their ancestors back to the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock, MA in 1620.
As Congregationalists we are held together by a church covenant rather than creed. Jesus is the head of our church and we are all responsible to seek God for guidance and direction as God is revealed in scripture. We recognize that although we may “See through a glass darkly” we can still do God’s work together without having to agree on every fine point of theology. A Congregational Church is a gathered company of Christians who are committed to God, God’s work, and to one another by covenant relationship. The covenant is narrow enough to encourage spiritual growth, and broad enough to be inclusive. To become a member of FCC, one does not have to accept a proscribed creed or Statement of Faith; but rather people are asked to accept and “own” the covenant as a basis for relationship between us and God and one another.
We exalt the spiritual completeness of each local Church; acknowledge, respect and defend the autonomy of each local Church and recognize covenanted Christian fellowship rather than ecclesiastical law is the tie that binds churches together. Thus, while retaining our local autonomy, our Church is in voluntary association with the Wisconsin Congregational Association (WCA) and the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches (NACCC).
Please feel free to ask questions of any member of our gathered community. We are all eager to share and learn together. The ministers of this community of faith are the people of this Church and not merely our pastor.
